Aim was to transport my bike 15 miles to the trail using Lexus RX330 or Mitsubishi Eclipse. A hitch and bike holder was an expensive option, while a roof rack was difficult for me to load the bike and not practical. Out of all bike trunk racks that I was able to review, only Saris Bones 805 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack would fit my SUV and Eclipse using Hatch Huggers. Plus it's elegant design and recycled material. I received my Bike Beam this week and gave it a test. It does exactly what is advertised to do and appears well built except for a design flaw that will cause the plastic collar where the two tubes of the bike beam slide together. The molded collar has a wedge molded into the inside of the ring which rides into a grove of the smaller tube. The problem is that the end of the grove ends before the inner tube bottoms out in the outer tube. This causes the wedge of the molded ring to rise up out the groove, putting a large amount of stress on the molded ring causing it to crack and eventually causing the ring to break and fall off. I believe the purpose of this ring is to make for a smooth operation when expanding the bike beam and to prevent debris from getting in between the 2 tube walls. I can see after a period of time without the ring, the Bike Beam may become harder to put on and off the bike as the debris between the 2 tubes builds up. I have written to Saris company about this flaw, but as usual I suppose the e-mail was read by a person hired to handle first level complaints and has no understanding of what I am trying to describe to them unless they have a Beam to look at. They quickly offered to send me a new bike beam but until the design flaw is corrected, briskly contracting the the beam or jarring either end when it is fully closed will cause the ring to break again. I have no problem with the collar being cracked because I will repair it myself and as far as the beam doing what it is supposed to do, it has little effect on that unless it is left un-repaired and debris is allowed to build up. My main purpose was to make Saris aware of the problem and correct it, because the next person may not think it is as minor of an issue as I do. I would of given this Beam a 4 or 5 even with the broken piece because it is that good but I am giving it a 2 in hopes it will flag someone at Saris to take a look at this problem.

I just came back from a 500 mile trip on which I transported two bikes (a man and a woman's Cannondale hybrid) using this rack without any problems, even when driving through severe thunderstorms with high wind and driving rain.



The rack is well made, easy to install and remove on just about any trunk, has good padding to protect the trunk (no marks were left), and holds the bikes nice and secure with the included rubber straps (though on any bike rack I also always use a few bungee cords of my own). I bought a three bike rack even though I normally transport only two bikes because I like the extra room, and the larger rack was only about another twenty dollars. Therefore, I can't comment on using this for three bikes.



While driving I did not hear any "buzzing" or "vibrating" sound from the rack at all. Also, I secured all of the extra lengths of strap so that they did not flap around.



Before you decide to buy a trunk rack rather than install a hitch, keep some things in mind (I personally prefer a rack that attaches to a hitch, but on the particular car that I was taking on the trip, attaching a hitch was not an option):



1. While a trunk rack generally costs less than the cost of a hitch and a separate rack, once the trunk rack is installed you cannot easily access the contents of your trunk. That means if you go on a trip, you need to pack the trunk before you attach the rack and put on your bikes, and when you arrive at your destination, you need to remove your bikes and the rack to unpack your luggage. At the end of a long trip when I am using a rack with a hitch, I often leave my bikes on the rack until the next day and just deal with my luggage upon arrival. That is not an option with a trunk rack. Likewise, if you want to get something out of your trunk or put something in during a trip while the trunk rack and bikes are on, that is not an option.



2. Depending on the make and model of your car and how the trunk rack sits on the trunk, you have to be careful not to scratch the trunk with the bikes' pedals, and may need to wrap them with socks or some other protection. With a hitch, the bikes are nowhere near the trunk, so that is not an issue.



3. Installing and removing a trunk rack is fairly simple and requires no tools. Removing and installing a hitch rack requires more effort and usually requires a wrench, and sometimes a rubber mallet when the rack gets "stuck" in the hitch.



Bottom line: If you decide to go with a trunk rack, this product works very well.

I got this bike rack because it was mid range, though now I'm wishing I had sprung for the extra few $$$ for the Bones.



Let's start with the good: Installation is a breeze and it fits VERY solidly on the back of my car, and fits a wide range of cars including Buick Lesabre and Toyota Camry. I'm quite confident that when I put my bike on, it's going to be there when I get to wherever I'm going.



Okay, so now the downsides:



The first issue I have is with the straps that affix this to the car. They hold the rack securely, but when you take taut straps and run air over them at 40+ mph, they start to buzz... LOUDLY. Maybe SUVs won't have this issue, but my sedans do.



Second issue is the whole question of 3 bikes. I put two bikes on, and really didn't see how I would fit a third on.



Lastly, there's putting a woman's bike on. It looks like women's bikes require the purchase of a Bike Beam accessory to create a virtual top tube. I got this only by looking at the website; the instructions in the box weren't clear about this. Such an accessory might be needed for every bike rack out there, but for the price, they could have included at least one! Or at least made it clearer at the time of purchase so that I could have purchased both at the same time.

I used to have a Bell 2-bike rack that I purchased from Wal-mart, and that was a big mistake. I was always afraid to have more than one bike on at a time, since they tended to bang together as I'd drive. I'm also rather positive that it was the cause of a bent chain ring on one of the bikes. It also held the bikes much too close to the car, and lead to quite a few scratches on my trunk and bumper cover.



This bike rack has none of those problems. It is solid as a rock on the trunk of my car, and it provides plenty of clearance from the car itself. The bikes are held apart by a nice amount of room, and I have no problem putting a mountain, hybrid, and road bike on the same rack. My only complaints are that installation takes a while (which is no different from any other trunk rack that I've used), and it's a little difficult to get some bikes on. It can be tough to get the bike frame around the stabilizer (the chunk of hard plastic that hangs below some of the rubber mounts). However once the bikes are on, it's smooth sailing.



Customer support is amazing as well. I had an incident the first time that I used the rack which involved one of the stabilizers breaking (my own fault), and when I called to order a new part, they sent me a new arm free of charge. It was at my door within a week.



I am extremely happy with my purchase. Although you may be tempted to buy a much cheaper rack, you'll certainly save money in the long run by purchasing this instead.

I searched many optional Trunk type universal Racks. This was about $100 more expensive that the rest, but I purchase because the design features seemed really nice.



I liked the ratcheting ties and the four point hold as opposed to the others six point.

The Round boots seemed ok, but appeared too hard and would damage the paint as opposed to the others using a very soft foam.



My big issues were the straps. Too long, difficult to use and always in the way during loading / unloading.



Other issue was my new rack had a defective frame support mount. Thy added a feature where you could move them out of the way during loading/ unloaded and one of the three did not work.



I emailed them on Monday and gave them the whole story, figuring they would send me a small part to fix it. I never heard back from them so I returned the rack.

The plastic binding straps (for mounting the bikes) on this rack scratch and damage the paint job and furthermore, do not offer sufficiently tight way to secure the bikes. This makes the bikes wobble and bounce on the road and increases the potential to damage. Very, very bad design by some person who obviously does not bike or use this product. Save your money and get the Thule -- any of the Thule's have rubberized straps that won't kill the paint job and at the same time offer a tighter grip on the bikes.

Saris Bones RS 3-Bike Trunk Mount Rack I bought the RS-3 as our new Passat 3.6 4-motion would not allow a hitch mount. I was very concerned about stability of the rack, the attached bikes and the finish/paintwork of the car. In a word (or so) no problems. The 2 mountain bikes we carry are rock steady on the rack, the rack is rock solid on the car and the paint hasn't suffered at all.



I recommend a thorough reading and understanding of the instructions and then a rereading and "dry mounting run". Given you mount the carrier correctly, it's a superior product worth the superior price. Make sure that the rack fasteners and cups are clean as should be the trunk lid of the car. It also works very well on my wife's M3.

Never had to even look at the instructions for this bike rack; I had watched the demo a couple of times, and the rack installed exactly as the video had shown. This is a rock-solid bike rack, and installation/removal couldn't be more of a breeze -- 30 seconds to one minute. For me, this rack is well worth the money. I have carried two bikes on it with no problems at all, but as another person stated in their review, the bikes do need their front wheel/handlebars secured so they don't move around ("yes/no" movement). I think this is a normal situation when a bike is suspended and moving on anything; I just use a small nylon harness to loop through the bike wheel and the bike itself to correct this "problem". The bikes are extremely secure, and for the first time, I don't worry at all about them falling off. Hands down, this is the ultimate in bike transport if you are going to use a trunk mount rack.

This rack is easy to put on the car. We traveled about 600 miles with 2 bikes on the rack. The 2 bottom straps tend to loosen up a bit after putting the bikes on, so it's a good idea to check on them when making stops. We also used some bungie cords for some extra security to keep the bikes attached to the rack. We had no problems with the rack or the bikes moving around. Overall, a good product for the price.

Pros: Cheap! Holds 3 bikes, but more like 2 on my 2000 Sentra w/ spoiler. Fits over most car spoilers. Folds and is easy to store.

Cons: The six straps are a pain to adjust. Bottom support rests on my license plate. Bike hold downs move around.



I bought this because it was the cheapest three bike trunk rack I could find. Over all, I'm happy. Unfortunately, like another reviewer here, the straps kept coming loose, even after I did as the manual said and tie things off in knots. This is most likely due to the foam compressing under load or the knots tightening and creating slack.



After a trip to REI, I fit two triglide rings to each of the top straps and one of the side straps. After adjusted to my car's trunk, I looped the straps through each triglide buckle twice. So that's three layers of webbing in each buckle. This also means I looped the webbing through the hooks, and the ladder locks bolted to the rack. The result is nice, dense, non adjusting, triple 1" webbing straps. This also means that I now have 3 straps less to worry about. I added two triglide buckle to each of the remaining three straps. Unlike the other straps, I didn't go through the triglides twice. Spacing them widely apart and going through them just once keeps the straps snug and secure, though a bit of a pain to adjust. If I had to do it again, I'd probably buy six or three 1" ratcheting or metal cam buckle straps. This of course would put me close to the price range of higher end racks. But for a few dollars, triglides can do the job. It also looks very tidy as there are no extra bits flapping in the wind.



Sadly, on my car, the bottom foam bar rests directly on my license plate. So it is slowly rubbing the paint away underneath it. A total bummer. I plan on adding a closed cell foam pad underneath it to put that to an end.



The bike hold downs do move about. Once I figure out what the best distances are for our bikes, a few inches of PVC pipe and or zip ties are probably in my future. I also picked up some 60" side release buckle straps to loop through the bike wheels to prevent spinning. A small patch of grip tape to the bottom support tube prevents scratching from chain rings and denting of seat tubes.



In the end, it's three stars. It's the little things that make a rack easy to use. This one lacks very much so the little things. But, a little thought and very inexpensive bits will make things right for existing owners. For the tinkerers, here's your canvas. :)

I used this rack on my Nissan Sentra to carry 2 bikes about 2,500 miles. It was very easy to put on and take off of the car, and the bikes were very sturdy. The only thing that I didn't like was that the bottom straps couldn't seem to stay tight, so everytime I stopped I would have to go out and tighten them again. I would recommend using extra ropes to tie the bike tires together so they don't spin while you're driving. Overall I was very satisfied with this rack and am glad I purchased it. It held up very well throughout the drive, just remember to check on it every once in a while, especially if it is very windy because the bikes tend to slide back on the bars a bit.

I used this bike rack when I moved across the country. I drove over 1600 miles with two bikes on the back and the rack held up great. It's easy to put on and take off - the straps are clearly labeled which is a huge plus, the foam is thick on the parts that touch the car, and I haven't had any problems with the straps loosening. The manual does tell you to knot them so they don't pull loose.





My only real concern is how the bikes attach to the rack... the straps have held up fine so far, but they don't give me the greatest level of confidence.. seems like there could have been a better design in there. Also, not really a plus or a minus, is that the bike supports aren't stationary - so you can't prevent the bike from sliding down the bar once you put it on. However, this allows you to adjust the width if you have a really wide bike, so it has it's advantages as well.

I purchased the more expensive Yakima Super Joe 3 rack but was disappointed when I learned that it didn't fit my Chrysler Pacifica. I checked bike stores and they only had the high end Saris Bones and Thelma racks--which weren't recommend for my car either. I was very happy to find the Saris Sentinel. At $70, it was only half the price of the racks sold in stores and, including shipping, was less than the Yakima rack that I initially purchased. I took one star away because getting the straps situated the first few times was pretty challenging.

I bought this rack in order to pick up a bicycle 160 miles away. I went to the Saris web site where they were able to tell me what rack to use for my car. The Sentinal 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack easily and firmly fit on my 2009 Pontiac G6. My only comment is that I wish it had come with more tie-downs to better immobilize the bike. A couple of over-sized Velcro cable ties worked just fine.



My other concern was whether this rack would scratch the paint on my car. The foam pads did a nice job of protecting the trunk and the plastic coated hooks left no evidence of the rack on the car. The rack easily breaks down to store in its original box. It was a good investment. I'm sure I'll use it again for other long distance trips with my bike.

Have used this model for about six months now, the retaining straps on the top bars slide to the end during longer trips. If you put two bikes on the rack the top bar can bite into the trunk top if you have a sedan and leave a dent. Not meant for heavier bikes or long trips. I got this because it was pretty cheap and it fits on a ford focus hatchback. It works fine with one full sized mountain bike but I think the 2 bike capacity must be for road/kids bikes. It works fine for short distances but I would not be very comfortable using this on a road trip without having to frequently stop and make adjustments. I also recommend bungee cords in addition to the straps to hold your bike in place.

My old bike rack was a cheap Allen model that only had one set of straps. Because of this, the lighter end of the bike rack would often lift up while in transit. This bike rack has the benefit of two sets of straps, so the bikes are much more secure. The plastic clip-in tie downs are nice, too.



My only thought is that, if you have the money to spend, get the three bike model, even if you're only transporting two. It is my understanding that the three bike model has an extra set of straps that eliminate shaking and wobbling even more (yes, when carrying two bikes, there is still some wobble when traveling at highway speeds). Also, it is a challenge to tie in both mine and my girlfriend's bikes, so longer rails would be nicer (because of the geometry of her bike, my handlebars hit in to her pannier rack, and I can't easily get the top tube to sit in the holders). Of course, if you're just transporting two road bikes without wide handlebars, you probably won't have a problem.

So, I'm pretty handy and I couldn't believe I didn't pull down on this rack hard enough to alert me because I drove through an intersection and looked in my rearview only to be greeted by nothing...the bikes fell off and I stopped immediately. The top straps did not hold tight, they were already threaded as I was told it "was ready to go". Once I tied the loose ends it worked fine and I was so glad to run into g & dj, who got me back on my feet. Once we tied the ends the rack worked great. I'm taking it back to the store that sold it to me to ask if the clasp is working as it should. My 2 cents.
