"Not bad at all for a $50 rack" 2010-01-26
By Deanna Teel (Austin, TX)
I'm not going to lie, this is a budget bike rack so it's not as strong and durable as the pricey ones, but none of that matters. I needed to take my pretty heavy mountain bike 200 miles and back without worrying about it falling off, and I must say, with all the wind and bumps on the road the rack held in place nicely.

The wonderful thing about this rack is that it's almost idiot proof when setting it up. Once you figure it out the first time it only takes a couple of minutes to assemble and disassemble. It should fit in your trunk also without taking up much space. For the average bike rider who needs to transport their bicycle from point A to point B without spending much $$ or worrying about their bike falling off, I would definitely recommend this product.

 "It did the trick." 2010-01-03
By F. Bonilla (CA)
I bought it last minute to transport a 1974 schwinn varsity from Turlock CA to San Diego CA. I drove an average of 70-75. The bike and rack made the trip without a hitch. I rate this a four star considering the speed, the weight of the bike and the distance. I read all the reviews the night before. This rack did not damage my car and the straps did not come loose. Good rack for the price.

 "Instructions don't match item" 2009-09-07
By James Claiborn (South Portland ME, USA)
I should have read the reviewer who said shred the instruction book. I made the mistake of trying to follow the instructions. The book contains drawings of an item with a different number of straps so I was confused at best. I tried to attach it in what seemed an intuitive way. I thought things were fine, put two bikes on it and started on a trip. I was fine the first mile then got on the highway. I fortunately was not far from the next exit because by the time I got off the highway a half mile later The rack was in a very different position. I fortunately can get the bikes in the back of my SUV and had to put everything inside to get it home.

I am reasonably literate, I have a PhD so you would think I could attach a bike rack. It suggests to me that the thing was not well designed.

 "Do Not Buy" 2009-07-18
By KC (MA)
I can not believe how many positive responses there are for this product. Now i got this as a gift and at first look it seems like a well built easy to use bike rack but there is one key problem, there is no way to lock down the arm that supports the bikes. You are suppose to push in the red buttons and move it into place but once you do there is this really weak locking system that is suppose to keep it in place. It did not look very safe to me so before i even though of putting my bike on it i applied a little downward pressure on the arms and it just popped out of place. Now it may hold for a little while but once you hit an average bump in the road ou end up scratching your car and dragging your bikes on the road behind you. Now maybe i am missing something but i refuse to even take a chance and try it out.

 "aweful zipper" 2009-01-09
By Kyle Costlow
Very Sturdy bag, but the zipper is terrible, it already broke on mine, I've had it less than 3 months. Also the bottom plastic plate that works with the topeak rack has cracked in half. Its strange because I have another similar bag from topeak that is doing just fine, and they carry the same stuff.

"Delta Aztec Trunk Quick Mount Bag" 2009-11-03
By David Mason (Fryeburg, Maine United States)
I recently ordered 2 more of these bike bags and racks from Amazon. My wife and I each have this Delta bag and rack (purchased at LLBean) on our bikes and they are perfect for storing lunch, water bottles, and an extra sweater or towel. Good size without being too bulky. Anyways, 1 box arrived with the bag and rack as advertized for $48.41 - a very good deal. The other box arrived with only the bag for $48.41 - not a good deal. Amazon was very good about returning the bag and refunding our money. I see now that the bag and the rack are sold seperately at Amazon. I highly recommend this combo package if you can find it.

 "Ultimately satisfactory" 2008-08-28
By Al Past (Beeville, TX USA)
The rack, and the slightly less necessary but still useful bag, are excellent bicycle accoutrements, well made and handsome. I was less than thrilled, however, when my first order contained only the bag--no rack. Amazon had me return it (it was easy) and sent another order the very next day (!). Unfortunately, it too was missing the rack. Manufacturer problem? I have no idea. But I debated with a real person at Amazon and he finally agreed to let me keep the bag and just send a rack, which is technically a different order. That worked. I'm glad I didn't need that stuff in a hurry, but I'm also glad Amazon stuck with it and made it right. That's worth a lot!

 "pretty good" 2007-09-17
By Robert W. Schuster Jr. (Tucson,AZ)
Overall I'm happy but it has 3 definate shortfalls

1st no strap on back for taillight

2nd main compartment could be bigger

3rd zipper lets rain right through, everything gets soaked

for 50 bucks for a rack and pack, it beats wearing a backpack for commuting!

By C. Bent (Bronx, NY United States)
Cycling in the Alps, self-supported. I used only this rack and bag, and a fanny pack. Recommended you get bungee cords and a waterproof cover but otherwise this rig is absolutely perfect. I tightened the bolts every day just to be safe. The bag holds an amazing amount -- as long as you are willing to wash your clothes every day this is all you'll need for your trip.

"Excellent design fits Lexus RX313 and Mitsubishi Eclipse" 2009-10-01
By BMJ
Aim was to transport my bike 15 miles to the trail using Lexus RX330 or Mitsubishi Eclipse. A hitch and bike holder was an expensive option, while a roof rack was difficult for me to load the bike and not practical. Out of all bike trunk racks that I was able to review, only Saris Bones 805 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack would fit my SUV and Eclipse using Hatch Huggers. Plus it's elegant design and recycled material. Delivery was prompt as usual from Amazon.com. Installed product in 15 minutes alone after reviewing the product video on web site as suggested by reviewer. The rack and Hatch Huggers proved to be sturdy and stable. I am very happy with the outcome and highly recommend it.

Attaches from the seat post to the stem of the bike creating the standard top tube of a men's style frame. Ideal for unique, women's and juvenile small frame and bikes with oversized tubes. You know the victorious photos of the lone mountain biker, having conquered the peak, raising his bike over his head in triumph? Ever wonder why you don't see more people lifting non- traditional frames? Well there is no place to grab them, if they had the Bike Beam, which connects the seatposts and handlebars to simulate the standard top tube, they'd have an easy hand hold. (A convenient bonus: the beam also makes it easy to carry non-traditional, non-diamond, frames on our B.A.T.and bones racks.)

 "Women's bike solution" 2010-02-04
By Lynn T. Manchester (Solvang, CA, US)
This makes it so easy to mount a women's step through frame bike on a car rack. The coated ends protect the bike from being scratched. My only complaint is that ist seems heavier than is necessary.

 "Flimsy" 2009-09-19
By Lohas addict (Shenyang, China)
The claws at each end don't lock securely - one of them came open while we were driving on the interstate. Luckily it stayed attached to the bike, but with worse luck the bike could have fallen onto the highway and gotten dragged or lost. I'm throwing it away and looking for something that attaches more securely to the bike posts.

"Great Device but with design flaw" 2009-09-11
By Richard L. Wood (Chesapeake, Virginia)
I received my Bike Beam this week and gave it a test. It does exactly what is advertised to do and appears well built except for a design flaw that will cause the plastic collar where the two tubes of the bike beam slide together. The molded collar has a wedge molded into the inside of the ring which rides into a grove of the smaller tube. The problem is that the end of the grove ends before the inner tube bottoms out in the outer tube. This causes the wedge of the molded ring to rise up out the groove, putting a large amount of stress on the molded ring causing it to crack and eventually causing the ring to break and fall off. I believe the purpose of this ring is to make for a smooth operation when expanding the bike beam and to prevent debris from getting in between the 2 tube walls. I can see after a period of time without the ring, the Bike Beam may become harder to put on and off the bike as the debris between the 2 tubes builds up. I have written to Saris company about this flaw, but as usual I suppose the e-mail was read by a person hired to handle first level complaints and has no understanding of what I am trying to describe to them unless they have a Beam to look at. They quickly offered to send me a new bike beam but until the design flaw is corrected, briskly contracting the the beam or jarring either end when it is fully closed will cause the ring to break again. I have no problem with the collar being cracked because I will repair it myself and as far as the beam doing what it is supposed to do, it has little effect on that unless it is left un-repaired and debris is allowed to build up. My main purpose was to make Saris aware of the problem and correct it, because the next person may not think it is as minor of an issue as I do. I would of given this Beam a 4 or 5 even with the broken piece because it is that good but I am giving it a 2 in hopes it will flag someone at Saris to take a look at this problem.

 "For Local Use Only" 2009-07-19
By BBlair (Washington State)
Just used this product for the first time today. The instructional manual is poorly organized and confusing, only listing cars up to 2005. Newer models are "unlisted" and require you to either follow the "unlisted" instructions, which are distractingly interspersed with the regular instructions, or call a phone number during business hours - no URL for this even though the company has an extensive website. This vendor has no instructional videos on how to mount this system on your vehicle that I could find, which give the significantly dangerous consequences of doing this incorrectly, is rather unforgivable.

As another reviewer noted, this is the bottom of the barrel, cheapest offering by this vendor for this type of system, so it does not come with attachments for your bikes - you will need to use bungee cords or some other type of attachment. Please be sure to not only connect the bikes to each other but also to the mounting system - you cannot use small bungee cords to do this. Get cords that are appropriate to the task.

Also, as noted, the clips that attach the rack to your car are metal, so over time there is the possibility that they will wear the paint on your car.

In my case, I was unable to stabilize the upper and lower mounting struts at the proper distance for my vehicle (14"). The device would only "lock in" at 13" or 15". We had to do 13" so that the struts would be properly horizontal, but this place the bottom strut right on top of the recess handle to open the back of the car.

To be fair, once you understand that all you need to do is place the device in the center of the car, attach two top clips, two side clips, and two bottom clips, then cinch the whole thing up, it isn't that hard. But it took us 45 minutes to figure this out because of the directions and because of the weird way a women's bike mounts on this system. The system does come with special "glass mounts" for vehicles with glass windows that dominate the back of the vehicle.

Using three bungee cords and only having to travel on local roads, we had no problems getting to our destination with two bikes. Be aware that it would be a simple matter to steal not only your bikes, but this whole rack, off the back of your car, so plan your trips accordingly.

I am giving it three stars because it worked, because it is cheap, and because we infrequently need to use this product. If you have expensive bikes, an expensive car, or are a more regular biker, I would certainly suggest upgrading - maybe to a vendor that gives better customer support.

"My bike fell off on the interstate using this rack!!!!" 2008-04-13
By CC
I would NOT recommend this bike rack - awkward, flimsy and worst of all, it really isn't safe. I think it's ok for one bike, which is what I use it for most of the time, but I used it for two this weekend, and one of the bikes came off while I was driving down the interstate. There is nothing more terrifying than seeing your bike bounce down the highway!! We ended up tying the bike with some extra rope for the rest of the trip so it didn't happen again. Don't risk it! Buy a better rack!

 "Just adequate" 2006-07-24
By J. Kustusch (Flagstaff, AZ)
It holds my bike but seems unstable - I still can't figure out where all 6 straps go on my car, and the support rails tilt downward towards the rear instead of upwards. Plus, probably the biggest concern - there is no means of strapping the bike to the rack (user must tie the bike down every time). My bike hasn't fallen off though...
