 "For Local Use Only" 2009-07-19
By BBlair (Washington State)
Just used this product for the first time today. The instructional manual is poorly organized and confusing, only listing cars up to 2005. Newer models are "unlisted" and require you to either follow the "unlisted" instructions, which are distractingly interspersed with the regular instructions, or call a phone number during business hours - no URL for this even though the company has an extensive website. This vendor has no instructional videos on how to mount this system on your vehicle that I could find, which give the significantly dangerous consequences of doing this incorrectly, is rather unforgivable.

As another reviewer noted, this is the bottom of the barrel, cheapest offering by this vendor for this type of system, so it does not come with attachments for your bikes - you will need to use bungee cords or some other type of attachment. Please be sure to not only connect the bikes to each other but also to the mounting system - you cannot use small bungee cords to do this. Get cords that are appropriate to the task.

Also, as noted, the clips that attach the rack to your car are metal, so over time there is the possibility that they will wear the paint on your car.

In my case, I was unable to stabilize the upper and lower mounting struts at the proper distance for my vehicle (14"). The device would only "lock in" at 13" or 15". We had to do 13" so that the struts would be properly horizontal, but this place the bottom strut right on top of the recess handle to open the back of the car.

To be fair, once you understand that all you need to do is place the device in the center of the car, attach two top clips, two side clips, and two bottom clips, then cinch the whole thing up, it isn't that hard. But it took us 45 minutes to figure this out because of the directions and because of the weird way a women's bike mounts on this system. The system does come with special "glass mounts" for vehicles with glass windows that dominate the back of the vehicle.

Using three bungee cords and only having to travel on local roads, we had no problems getting to our destination with two bikes. Be aware that it would be a simple matter to steal not only your bikes, but this whole rack, off the back of your car, so plan your trips accordingly.

I am giving it three stars because it worked, because it is cheap, and because we infrequently need to use this product. If you have expensive bikes, an expensive car, or are a more regular biker, I would certainly suggest upgrading - maybe to a vendor that gives better customer support.

"My bike fell off on the interstate using this rack!!!!" 2008-04-13
By CC
I would NOT recommend this bike rack - awkward, flimsy and worst of all, it really isn't safe. I think it's ok for one bike, which is what I use it for most of the time, but I used it for two this weekend, and one of the bikes came off while I was driving down the interstate. There is nothing more terrifying than seeing your bike bounce down the highway!! We ended up tying the bike with some extra rope for the rest of the trip so it didn't happen again. Don't risk it! Buy a better rack!

 "Just adequate" 2006-07-24
By J. Kustusch (Flagstaff, AZ)
It holds my bike but seems unstable - I still can't figure out where all 6 straps go on my car, and the support rails tilt downward towards the rear instead of upwards. Plus, probably the biggest concern - there is no means of strapping the bike to the rack (user must tie the bike down every time). My bike hasn't fallen off though...

"Easy to use and very sturdy!" 2009-11-02
By T. L. Comtois (Los Angeles, CA)
I got this for my husband's beach cruiser and it was so easy to attach on to our Honda Civic's trunk and load his bike on, it took maybe 3 minutes total. I looked at several different mount racks but this was both durable and reasonably priced. I haven't tried putting my (women's) beach cruiser on it yet, so I'm not sure how that is going to do, but so far I have no complaints. It goes on our car easily and I have no worries about it slipping off. The first time I used it I had a person from the bike shop I purchased my husband's bike at install it for me and he put the bike on and tied the straps onto the wheels so they wouldn't spin or turn while driving. He said the ties were really for extra security and even the force of freeway wind wouldn't be enough to pull our bikes off of the rack because of the weight of the bike and the slant of the rack, and sure enough nothing budged during my ride home on the freeway. I highly recommend!

"Schwinn 3 place bike rack" 2009-09-24
By Scott Person
ordered it on saturday and got it on thursday morning with super saver shipping.I had the 2 place model before, but i needed a 3 place. So i sold my old 2 place and purchased this one.I like this one more than my 2 place because it has 2 extra straps to help secure it were my 2 place didint.only 1 thing i didnt like and thats why it has 4 stars is that when its secured to the trunk with bikes on it the pads become almost level with your trunk and the metal bar in between the pads will rub off your paint so i just stick a glove under the metal bars so it has more cushion and it works great.the other guy who reveiwed this rack is a cry baby.I dare you to try and find a rack for this price with free shipping !Thanks amazon you have a new customer on your hands.

"versitle bike carrier for the price" 2009-10-28
By Mark F. Wiser
I purchase the rack because it looked similar to one I had several years ago. Overall, it is simple to attach to the car and appears quite stable. It folds up relatively small and fits in the trunk when not in use. One minor problem is the it does not accomodate women's bicycles very well. Also the placeholders for the bicycles seem to be designed for racing bikes and do not accomodate cruisers very well. It would have been better to leave the bar smooth to provide more flexibility in terms of placing the bicycles on the rack. The most substantial complaint is that the descriptions indicated that it fit on virtually any trunk. However, the box and the instructions indicated it was only designed to fit over the spare tire of SUVs. Putting it on the trunk does not appear to be a problem, but the sellers should be clearer about this. Overall, though it is a good rack for the price.

The rack works fine. Everything was pre-assembled,which is good because I'm not mechanically inclined. It took about 10-15 minutes to adjust the 2 upper straps to my Crown Vic (2001) so the rack wouldn't slip or move while in use.

"Broke the first time out!" 2010-01-29
By D. Waugh (MA)
We bought the same Bell Triple-Back from the sports "superstore" at the mall. Calling it a 3 bike bike rack is a joke for starters. 3 children's bikes were a real tight fit. And one of the velcro loop straps broke off just tying the bike down to the load bar. I had to use zip ties. Then it COLLAPSED under the weight of those 3 kid's bikes on the highway. The straps holding the rack to the car were secure, but the support arm just popped its pin and fell down. It went back to the store.

 "Bike Rack Review" 2008-10-14
By Chayil Wiedeman (chicago, IL)
This product works pretty well! I used it for a 6-hr trip with two large mountain bikes and as long as the straps were tight and correctly mounted in place, there were no problems. It is important to put the rack on correctly, there was a little confusion on how to mount it to my sedan trunk. It didn't give the best directions, but with a little trial and error, it worked out perfectly. It doesn't fit three bikes unless one or two of them are tiny road bikes or kids' bikes. All in all, it is reliable and very affordable!

"Bike Rack Poor Quality Finish" 2009-10-11
By Glenn C. Martinet (new jersey)
Hollywood Racks B3 Baja 3-Bike Trunk Mount Rack The rack itself has nice features that keep the bike/s firmly in place. It is easy to mount on my Kia sedona van. BUT the quality of the paint on this rack is shoddy at best. After I came home from it's first use I noticed the paint had peeled or flaked off the steel frame of the rack.

I'm not going to return it because of the inconvience of that process but will respray it with Rustoleum.

I'm very disappointed in the quality of the paint that protects this rack from the elements. My previous bike rack (Graber) is over 14yrs old and is just starting to show signs of wear. I use my bike rack all year long (at the New Jersey Shore) so it is exposed to all of the elements including the salt air.

"Holds bikes OK but beware of your car model and bike size!" 2008-05-27
By A.C. (Phoenix, AZ)
This rack does not seem to fit on the Nissan Xterra. The bike arm and upper support bar are one piece so when we tried to position the top bar above the rear windshield wiper the bike arm slanted down towards the ground. The rear windshield wiper on the Xterra does not allow you to position the bottom arm on the bumper with clearance for the wiper at the top. Maybe the rack isn't supposed to rest on the bumper?? Despite our bikes hanging at an angle towards the ground they did seem to stay in place pretty well after hassling with all of those squirrely rubber straps. My husband's bike has a smaller frame though which was a real headache to try and force onto the rack. Sadly we will have to return this rack.

"Easy assembly and mount but not ideal for all model bicycles" 2006-06-14
By Laura Cain (biloxi, ms)
This is very sturdy. It came fully assembled in the box and it was easy to mount on my car. All it took was some adjusting of the straps. My ten speed fits well but my old Schwinn beach cruiser, which has an arched and curved frame, does not fit well. My sons bikes also didn't fit. The frames were too small and fat. This is more ideal for adult bikes with straight-angled frames.

"Great rack but maybe not new as stated" 2009-12-21
By bike rider (San Rafael, Ca.)
The rack is great for bikes and fits my SUV. I purchased a new rack but it came with paint missing where the bike arms fold to different angles, as would happen from a lot of wear. The locking pins did not hold the bars because the bolts where very loose and the bikes fell the first time I drove with the rack. I would not trust this dealer for new items.

"Easy and effective to use" 2009-08-21
By Stephen M. Charme (Cranford, NJ United States)
I just came back from a 500 mile trip on which I transported two bikes (a man and a woman's Cannondale hybrid) using this rack without any problems, even when driving through severe thunderstorms with high wind and driving rain.

The rack is well made, easy to install and remove on just about any trunk, has good padding to protect the trunk (no marks were left), and holds the bikes nice and secure with the included rubber straps (though on any bike rack I also always use a few bungee cords of my own). I bought a three bike rack even though I normally transport only two bikes because I like the extra room, and the larger rack was only about another twenty dollars. Therefore, I can't comment on using this for three bikes.

While driving I did not hear any "buzzing" or "vibrating" sound from the rack at all. Also, I secured all of the extra lengths of strap so that they did not flap around.

Before you decide to buy a trunk rack rather than install a hitch, keep some things in mind (I personally prefer a rack that attaches to a hitch, but on the particular car that I was taking on the trip, attaching a hitch was not an option):

1. While a trunk rack generally costs less than the cost of a hitch and a separate rack, once the trunk rack is installed you cannot easily access the contents of your trunk. That means if you go on a trip, you need to pack the trunk before you attach the rack and put on your bikes, and when you arrive at your destination, you need to remove your bikes and the rack to unpack your luggage. At the end of a long trip when I am using a rack with a hitch, I often leave my bikes on the rack until the next day and just deal with my luggage upon arrival. That is not an option with a trunk rack. Likewise, if you want to get something out of your trunk or put something in during a trip while the trunk rack and bikes are on, that is not an option.

2. Depending on the make and model of your car and how the trunk rack sits on the trunk, you have to be careful not to scratch the trunk with the bikes' pedals, and may need to wrap them with socks or some other protection. With a hitch, the bikes are nowhere near the trunk, so that is not an issue.

3. Installing and removing a trunk rack is fairly simple and requires no tools. Removing and installing a hitch rack requires more effort and usually requires a wrench, and sometimes a rubber mallet when the rack gets "stuck" in the hitch.

Bottom line: If you decide to go with a trunk rack, this product works very well.

"Tough to fit 3-bikes, buzzes while driving fast" 2009-08-08
By Michael A. Behr (New York, NY United States)
I got this bike rack because it was mid range, though now I'm wishing I had sprung for the extra few $$$ for the Bones.

Let's start with the good: Installation is a breeze and it fits VERY solidly on the back of my car, and fits a wide range of cars including Buick Lesabre and Toyota Camry. I'm quite confident that when I put my bike on, it's going to be there when I get to wherever I'm going.

Okay, so now the downsides:

The first issue I have is with the straps that affix this to the car. They hold the rack securely, but when you take taut straps and run air over them at 40+ mph, they start to buzz... LOUDLY. Maybe SUVs won't have this issue, but my sedans do.

Second issue is the whole question of 3 bikes. I put two bikes on, and really didn't see how I would fit a third on.

Lastly, there's putting a woman's bike on. It looks like women's bikes require the purchase of a Bike Beam accessory to create a virtual top tube. I got this only by looking at the website; the instructions in the box weren't clear about this. Such an accessory might be needed for every bike rack out there, but for the price, they could have included at least one! Or at least made it clearer at the time of purchase so that I could have purchased both at the same time.

 "Nice rack!" 2009-08-08
By Justin J. Waters (Pittsburgh, PA USA)
I used to have a Bell 2-bike rack that I purchased from Wal-mart, and that was a big mistake. I was always afraid to have more than one bike on at a time, since they tended to bang together as I'd drive. I'm also rather positive that it was the cause of a bent chain ring on one of the bikes. It also held the bikes much too close to the car, and lead to quite a few scratches on my trunk and bumper cover.

This bike rack has none of those problems. It is solid as a rock on the trunk of my car, and it provides plenty of clearance from the car itself. The bikes are held apart by a nice amount of room, and I have no problem putting a mountain, hybrid, and road bike on the same rack. My only complaints are that installation takes a while (which is no different from any other trunk rack that I've used), and it's a little difficult to get some bikes on. It can be tough to get the bike frame around the stabilizer (the chunk of hard plastic that hangs below some of the rubber mounts). However once the bikes are on, it's smooth sailing.

Customer support is amazing as well. I had an incident the first time that I used the rack which involved one of the stabilizers breaking (my own fault), and when I called to order a new part, they sent me a new arm free of charge. It was at my door within a week.

I am extremely happy with my purchase. Although you may be tempted to buy a much cheaper rack, you'll certainly save money in the long run by purchasing this instead.
